I began showing
my art in public at annual Day of the Dead festivals. This
Mexican holiday encourages remembrance, and reminds us that
dying is a part of living. For these celebrations I would
create elaborate altars for the deceased, using art objects
and paintings of my own creation. |
If I had to name
my style I would call it ģFolk art with a twistī. I work with
many different themes and media. For my paintings I use acrylic,
watercolor and designer gouache.
For sculptures and
installations I use paper mache, acrylic medium, gold leaf
and found objects. Most of my work is figurative. Re-occurring
images that show up in my work are angels, demons, skeletons,
divas and pre-hispanic characters. I think there is a lot
of humor in my work, even tough some can be seen as macabre.
My work explores
traditional notions vof what beauty is. I get inspired by
things as diverse as comic books, folk toys, graffiti and
tattoo imagery. I have concentrated my art education to independent
study and experimentation. For me creating paintings, installations
and art objects is a continuing process of expressing ideas,
creating beauty (or horror) and expressing ideas from the
personal to the political. Born in Mexico City, I currently
live in San Francisco. My work has been exhibited in several
museums in Northern California.
